Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TaVI): an example of how to organise a TaVI programme

as the population ages, aortic valve stenosis becomes more prevalent. Patients who are symptomatic due to aortic valve stenosis have a severely diminished life expectancy and are, therefore, candidates for surgical aortic valve replacement.1 That said, many of these patients (estimated up to one-third) do not undergo surgery, mainly because of the presence of severe comorbidities and the associ...

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation operators - get involved in imaging!

Pre-procedural planning is the key element of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Multislice computed tomography of the chest, abdomen and pelvis with the ability to perform a 3-dimensional reconstruction has become the cornerstone of pre-procedural planning. We would like to encourage TAVI operators (interventional cardiologist and surgeons) to get involved in imaging. All TAVI ope...

Caval-Aortic Access to Allow Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement in Patients Otherwise Ineligible: Initial Human Experience

Objectives—We describe the first use of caval-aortic access and closure to enable transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in patients who lacked other access options. Caval-aortic access refers to percutaneous entry into the abdominal aorta from the femoral vein through the adjoining inferior vena cava. Background—TAVR is attractive in high risk or inoperable patients with severe aortic s...
